NBOME Information Literacy Skills

The NBOME core competencies for licensure highlight information literacy. A few examples are:

  • convert the need for information into an answerable clinical question.

  • use information technology to manage and access the best medical information.

  • appraise critically the available evidence and its validity, impact, and applicability.

  • integrate the critical appraisal of the medical literature with clinical expertise and the patient’s unique circumstances.

Wikipedia doesn't cut it anymore

Many students routinely rely on Wikipedia and other unvetted (unexamined, unevaluated) web sites for information. This guide was developed at faculty request because, "Wikipedia doesn't cut it anymore."

It's purpose is twofold: 1) to introduce you to quality, peer-reviewed information resources licensed by the PCOM Library for your use, and
2) to promote development of your information literacy skills and expertise.

Usefulness of information = (Relevance) x  (Validity)
                                  `                       Work

Research expertise requires an understanding of:

  • the different types of information available to you: what are primary, secondary, and synthesized resources
  • appropriate selection of information resources
  • database search skills
  • critical review skills
  • research management skills

Review the contents of this guide, including search tutorials. Efficient search skills are essential tools for targeting information retrieval, finding the best information with the least amount of effort, and saving you time.
