REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online databases and surveys.

REDCap

The REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) system is a secure web-based system for collecting, storing and doing preliminary analysis on research data. Originally developed at Vanderbilt University, it is used at more than 1,600 institutions in almost 100 countries around the world.

PCOM hosts our own REDCap system. PCOM faculty, students, and staff conducting research can request access to the system; faculty can request limited access for non-PCOM personnel. Using REDCap, users can

  • test and build a series of data collection surveys
  • distribute the surveys as links or via email
  • use them to enter data (either here at Downstate or by your research partners at other institutions).
  • use the system to follow up on selected patients.
  • export for analysis on other systems.
  • easily “de-identify” data during export for HIPAA compliance.

The system is secure. It is easy to use and learn via online videos and workshops or one-on-one training here on campus.

Want to know more about REDCap?

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) was developed by an informatics team at Vanderbilt University with support from federal grants. It is widely used in the academic research community and designed to address common problems confronted by academic biomedical researchers who want to use electronic databases. More information about the history of REDCap is contained in this article: Research electronic data capture (REDCap)—A metadata-driven methodology and workflow process for providing translational research informatics support.

Using REDCap's stream-lined process for rapidly developing projects, you may create and design projects using 1) the online method from your web browser using the Online Designer; and/or 2) the offline method by constructing a 'data dictionary' template file in Microsoft Excel, which can be later uploaded into REDCap. Both surveys and databases (or a mixture of the two) can be built using these methods.

REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.

Please note that any publication that results from a project utilizing REDCap should cite the REDCap project as specified on the Citing REDCap page. If you are collecting data for the purposes of human subjects research, review and approval is required of your institutional review board.
